Complete Guide to Sri Lanka Railways: Tickets, Routes & Tips
Overview of Sri Lanka Railways
Traveling by train is the most scenic, affordable, and popular way to navigate Sri Lanka. The network connects the coastal beaches, the cultural triangle, and the famous central highlands. However, the system is antiquated, and understanding the ticket classes and booking processes is crucial for a smooth journey.
Understanding Ticket Classes
1st Class (Observation Saloon / Air-Conditioned): Reserved seating only. Features AC, comfortable seats, and sometimes large viewing windows. Must be booked weeks in advance.
2nd Class Reserved: Reserved seating, fans, and open windows (best for photography). Highly recommended for the hill country routes.
2nd & 3rd Class Unreserved: You buy these tickets on the day of travel. You are not guaranteed a seat, and trains can get incredibly crowded. Excellent for short coastal trips, but grueling for long journeys.
Top Scenic Routes
The Hill Country Train (Kandy to Ella): Widely considered one of the most beautiful train rides in the world. It passes through lush tea estates, pine forests, and across the Nine Arches Bridge.
The Coastal Line (Colombo to Galle/Matara): The train runs literally meters from the crashing waves of the Indian Ocean. Sit on the right side of the train when heading south.
How to Book Tickets
Online Booking: You can book reserved seats via the official Sri Lanka Railways website or the seat.lk platform up to 30 days in advance.
Station Counters: Reserved tickets can be bought at major stations (Colombo Fort, Kandy, Galle). Unreserved tickets are only sold at the station on the day of departure, usually 1 hour before the train arrives.
Important Tips for Travelers
Delays are normal: Do not plan tight connections. Trains frequently run 30-60 minutes late.
Food on board: Local vendors will walk through the unreserved and 2nd class carriages selling roasted peanuts, cut fruit, and short-eats (pastries).
