Overview of Tuk-Tuks (Three-Wheelers)

The auto-rickshaw, universally known as the tuk-tuk, is the lifeblood of Sri Lankan transport. They are everywhere, capable of navigating through gridlocked traffic, and offer a breezy, open-air way to see the city. However, tourists and expats are frequent targets for overcharging if they don't know the rules.

Metered vs. Unmetered

• Metered Tuk-Tuks: In Colombo and major suburbs, always insist on a tuk-tuk with a working meter. The meter should clearly display the starting fare when you enter.

• Unmetered Tuk-Tuks: Outside of Colombo (like in Galle, Ella, or Kandy), meters are rare. You must negotiate and agree on the fare before getting inside.

Ride-Hailing Apps (The Safest Option) If you want to avoid haggling completely, use local ride-hailing apps. They offer upfront pricing, GPS tracking, and you can pay by card or cash.

• PickMe: The most popular local app. Excellent for tuk-tuks, cars, and food delivery.

• Uber: Widely used in Colombo, offering tuk-tuks (UberTuk), standard cars, and premium vehicles.

Standard Pricing (Approximate Guidelines)

• Fares fluctuate with fuel prices, but a standard metered tuk-tuk generally charges a base fare for the first kilometer, and a fixed rate for every subsequent kilometer.

• Waiting time: Meters also charge a small fee for sitting in heavy traffic.

Important Tips

• Carry small change: Drivers frequently claim they do not have change for large notes (1000 or 5000 Rupee bills). Carry 100 and 500 notes.

• Left-side exit: Always exit the tuk-tuk from the left side (the curb side) to avoid stepping into oncoming traffic.

• Tuk-Tuk Safaris: Many drivers will offer to take you on a "city tour." Only accept this if you have negotiated a flat hourly or half-day rate in advance.
