Pigeon Island National Park

Overview

Located just a short boat ride from Nilaveli Beach, Pigeon Island is one of Sri Lanka's two marine national parks. It is famous for its powdery white sand and incredible shallow-water coral reefs.

Activities

This is the best snorkeling spot in the country. You can swim alongside Blacktip reef sharks, Hawksbill turtles, and hundreds of species of colorful reef fish just meters from the shore.

Practical Information

• Access: Hire a boat from the Nilaveli beach cooperatives.
• Foreign Tickets: Approximately $15 - $20 USD (plus boat hire fees).
• Best Season: May to September, when the seas on the East Coast are calmest.
