Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage

Overview

Established in 1975, this orphanage, nursery, and captive breeding ground is home to one of the largest herds of captive elephants in the world.

What to Expect

The highlight for most visitors is watching the entire herd being led down to the Maha Oya river twice a day for their two-hour bath.

Practical Information

• Bathing Times: 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM, and 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM.
• Tickets: LKR 3,000 for foreign adults.
