Overview of the Sri Lankan ETA System

Entering Sri Lanka is generally a straightforward process for most nationalities, heavily relying on an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system. You should always apply for your visa before boarding your flight to avoid massive delays at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA).

The Tourist ETA Process

• Application: You must apply through the official government portal (eta.gov.lk). Avoid third-party agency websites that charge heavy markup fees.

• Validity: The standard tourist ETA is typically valid for 30 days and allows for double entry.

• Processing Time: Most ETAs are approved and emailed to you within 24 to 48 hours, though it often happens within minutes.

Visa on Arrival

• While a Visa on Arrival facility exists at the airport for many nationalities, it is highly recommended not to rely on it. The queues can be hours long during peak tourist season, and the fee is slightly higher than applying online.

Extending Your Stay
