Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic

Overview

The Sri Dalada Maligawa is the most sacred Buddhist site in Sri Lanka, housing the relic of the tooth of the Buddha. The stunning temple complex is located within the royal palace complex of the former Kingdom of Kandy.

What to Expect

The temple is heavily scented with lotus flowers and incense. The actual tooth is kept in a golden casket shaped like a stupa, which is heavily guarded. The best time to visit is during the daily offerings (Thevava) when drumming and chanting echo through the halls.

• Opening Hours: 5:30 AM to 8:00 PM.
• Foreign Tickets: LKR 2,000.
• Dress Code: Strictly enforced. Shoulders and knees MUST be covered. Wear white if possible.
