Overview
Rising nearly 200 meters above the central plains, Sigiriya is an ancient palace and fortress complex built by King Kasyapa in the 5th century. It is renowned for its frescoes, mirror wall, and monumental lion paws guarding the final ascent.
The Climb
The climb consists of roughly 1,200 steps. While steep, it is broken up into several terraces where you can rest and take in the incredible engineering of the water gardens below.
Practical Information
- Opening Hours: 7:00 AM to 5:30 PM (Ticket office closes at 5:00 PM).
- Foreign Tickets: $30 USD (includes museum entry).
- Local Tickets: LKR 100.
- Tip: Start your climb exactly at 7:00 AM to beat the crowds and the midday sun.
