Overview of Ella

Ella is a small town nestled high in the Uva Province mountains. Over the last decade, it has transformed into Sri Lanka's premier backpacker and hiking hub. The climate is much cooler than the coast, the air is fresh, and the vibe is incredibly laid-back, centered around outdoor activities and a vibrant main street cafe culture.

Key Hiking & Attractions

• Nine Arches Bridge: An iconic colonial-era railway bridge hidden in the jungle. Check the train schedule locally to time your visit for when a train crosses.

• Little Adam's Peak: An easy, incredibly scenic hike offering panoramic views of the Ella Gap. Takes about 45 minutes to the summit from the main road.

• Ella Rock: A more challenging, multi-hour hike requiring navigation through tea plantations and rail tracks, rewarding hikers with the highest vantage point in the area.

• Ravana Falls: A massive waterfall located just a short drive down the mountain from the main town.

Dining & Nightlife

• Main Street: Unlike most of Sri Lanka, Ella has a concentrated nightlife. The main strip is packed with bars, live music venues, and cafes serving both local curries and international western food.

• Chill Restaurant: The most famous establishment in town, functioning as a restaurant, bar, and central meeting point for travelers.

Transportation

• Ella Railway Station: The destination of the famous Kandy-to-Ella train ride. The station itself is picturesque and charming.

• Tuk-Tuks: Because the terrain is mountainous, you will rely on tuk-tuks to get to trailheads. Negotiate prices before getting in, as they are not metered here.
