The East Coast: Trincomalee Beaches & Arugam Bay Surf
Overview of the East Coast
The East Coast is Sri Lankaโs ultimate summer destination. Due to the island's dual monsoon system, when the South Coast is raining and rough (May to September), the East Coast is dry, sunny, and boasts calm, crystal-clear waters. It is divided into two main hubs: Trincomalee in the northeast and Arugam Bay in the southeast.
Trincomalee & Nilaveli (The Northeast)
Pigeon Island National Park: Located just off the coast of Nilaveli Beach, this is the best snorkeling spot in Sri Lanka. You can swim with harmless blacktip reef sharks and sea turtles.
Koneswaram Temple: A stunning Hindu temple perched high on a cliff edge over the ocean, surrounded by roaming deer.
Vibe: Trinco is generally quieter, with large stretches of pristine white-sand beaches perfect for relaxing.
Arugam Bay (The Southeast)
World-Class Surfing: Arugam Bay (A-Bay) is consistently ranked as one of the top surfing destinations in Asia. The main point break is legendary, but there are smaller breaks nearby (Whiskey Point, Peanut Farm) for beginners.
Wildlife: Kumana National Park is just south of Arugam Bay. It is famous for leopard sightings and is far less crowded than the popular Yala National Park.
Vibe: A-Bay is a quintessential backpacker town. The main strip is packed with vegan cafes, reggae bars, and surfboard rental shacks.
Transportation
Getting to Trincomalee: You can take a direct train or an overnight bus from Colombo.
Getting to Arugam Bay: There are no trains to A-Bay. You must hire a private driver or take a long-distance bus (often requiring a transfer in Monaragala or Pottuvil).
